ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ सूतसूत महाभाग धन्यस्त्वं शिवसक्तधीः ॥ महाबलस्य लिंगस्य श्रावितेयं कथाद्भुता ॥ १ ॥
The sages said:— Sūta, O fortunate Sūta, you are blessed with your mind attached to Śiva. This wonderful story of Mahābala has been narrated to you.
english translation
उत्तरस्यां दिशायां च शिवलिंगानि यानि च ॥ तेषां माहात्म्यमनघ वद त्वं पापनाशकम् ॥ २॥
Please narrate the sacred glory oí the sin-destroying phallic images that are in the northern quarter.
english translation
सूत उवाच॥ शृणुतादरतो विप्रा औत्तराणां विशेषतः ॥ माहात्म्यं शिवलिंगानां प्रवदामि समासतः ॥ ३ ॥
Sūta said:— O brahmins, listen with respect. I shall succinctly explain the particular glory of the northern phallic images of Śiva.
english translation
गोकर्णं क्षेत्रमपरं महापातकनाशनम् ॥ महावनं च तत्रास्ति पवित्रमतिविस्तरम् ॥ ४ ॥
There is another shrine Gokarṇa destructive of great sins. There is an extensive holy forest there.
english translation
तत्रास्ति चन्द्रभालाख्यं शिवलिंगमनुत्तमम् ॥ रावणेन समानीतं सद्भक्त्या सर्वसिद्धिदम् ॥ ५ ॥
The moon-crested Śiva’s phallic image, excellent of all, is situated there. It was installed by Rāvaṇa with great devotion and it confers all accomplishments.
