ईश्वर उवाच ॥ शिवो महेश्वरश्चैव रुद्रो विष्णुः पितामहः ॥ संसारवैद्यस्सर्वज्ञः परमात्मेति मुख्यतः ॥ १ ॥
Lord Śiva said:— Shiva, Maheshwara, Rudra and Vishnu are the grandfathers. The physician of the world is omniscient and chiefly the Supreme Self.
english translation
Izvara uvAca ॥ zivo mahezvarazcaiva rudro viSNuH pitAmahaH ॥ saMsAravaidyassarvajJaH paramAtmeti mukhyataH ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनामाष्टकमिदं नित्यं शिवस्य प्रतिपादकम् ॥ आद्यन्तपञ्चकन्तत्र शान्त्यतीताद्यनुक्रमात् ॥ २॥
This eightfold name is always the representative of Lord Shiva. There are five elements, beginning and ending, in order of peace, past and present.
english translation
nAmASTakamidaM nityaM zivasya pratipAdakam ॥ AdyantapaJcakantatra zAntyatItAdyanukramAt ॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसंज्ञा सहाशिवादीनां पञ्चोपाधिपरिग्रहात् ॥ उपाधिविनिवृत्तौ तु यथास्वं विनि वर्तते ॥ ३ ॥
The five names of Sadāśiva are dependent on their condition. If the condition alters the name too alters.
english translation
saMjJA sahAzivAdInAM paJcopAdhiparigrahAt ॥ upAdhivinivRttau tu yathAsvaM vini vartate ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपदमेव हितं नित्यमनित्याः पदिनः स्मृताः ॥ पदानां परिवृत्ति स्यान्मुच्यंते पदिनो यतः ॥ ४ ॥
The word is permanent. The object indicated by the word is non-permanent. The words are transferable since those indicated by the words are released.
english translation
padameva hitaM nityamanityAH padinaH smRtAH ॥ padAnAM parivRtti syAnmucyaMte padino yataH ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरिवृत्त्यन्तरे त्वेवं भूयस्तस्याप्युपाधिना ॥ आत्मान्तराभिधानं स्यात्पादाद्यं नामपंचकम् ॥ ५॥
Even when words are transferred there are conditions again. The first five names denote things other than Ātman.

parivRttyantare tvevaM bhUyastasyApyupAdhinA ॥ AtmAntarAbhidhAnaM syAtpAdAdyaM nAmapaMcakam ॥ 5॥
