मूर्तित्वे परिकल्पितः शशभृतो वर्त्मापुनर्जन्मनामात्मेत्यात्मविदां क्रतुश्च यजतां भर्तामरज्योतिषाम् । लोकानां प्रलयोद्भवस्थितिविभुश्चानेकधा यः श्रुतौ वाचं नः स ददात्वनेककिरणस्त्रैलोक्यदीपो रविः ॥ १-१ ॥
The Sun, many rayed light of the world, unfolding the different phases of the Moon, the lord of destruction, creation, and preservation, the soul of the births on the liberated path, the sacrifice of the knowing soul, the lord of sacrifices and the science of the heavenly bodies and of the worlds, who is in the Veda in various ways, may that one grants us speech.

hk transliteration by Sanscriptभूयोभिः पटुबुद्धिभिः पटुधियां होराफलज्ञप्तये शब्दन्यायसमन्वितेषु बहुशः शास्त्रेषु दृष्टेष्वपि । होरातन्त्रमहार्णवप्रतरणे भग्नोद्यमानाम् अहं स्वल्पं वृत्तविचित्रमर्थबहुलं शास्त्रप्लवं प्रारभे ॥ १-२॥
With abundant clever understanding in clever intelligence for the comprehension of the results of the horoscope in the connection with the systematic reasonings, even in the known instructions, in crossing the ocean of horoscopic doctrine for the sake of frustrated efforts, I will prepare a boat of instructions with concise and various examples and many methods.

bhUyobhiH paTubuddhibhiH paTudhiyAM horAphalajJaptaye zabdanyAyasamanviteSu bahuzaH zAstreSu dRSTeSvapi । horAtantramahArNavaprataraNe bhagnodyamAnAm ahaM svalpaM vRttavicitramarthabahulaM zAstraplavaM prArabhe ॥ 1-2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptहोरेत्यहोरात्रविकल्पम् एके वाञ्छन्ति पूर्वापरवर्णलोपात् । कर्माजितं पूर्वभवे सद् आदि यत्तस्य पङ्क्तिं समभिव्यनक्ति ॥ १-३॥
Some persons are inclined to take “Hora” as an abbreviated form of “Ahoratra” (consisting of day and night) from dropping the first and last syllable.

horetyahorAtravikalpam eke vAJchanti pUrvAparavarNalopAt । karmAjitaM pUrvabhave sad Adi yattasya paGktiM samabhivyanakti ॥ 1-3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकालाङ्गानि वराङ्गमाननमुरो हृत्क्रोडवासो भृतो बस्तिर्व्यञ्जनमूरुजानुयुगले जङ्घे ततोऽङ्घ्रिद्वयम् । मेषाश्विप्रथमा नवऋक्षचरणाश्चक्रस्थिता राशयो राशिक्षेत्रगृहऋक्षभानि भवनं चैकार्थसम्प्रत्ययाः ॥ १-४ ॥
The limbs of time are the best limb (the head), mouth, breast, heart, middle part (the belly), hips, bladder, genitals, a pair of thighs and of knees, the two shanks (the shins), from that, the two pair of feet. The first is in the Ashvins in Aries.

The two fishes (Pisces), a water jar (Aquarius), a pair of humans with a mace and a lute (Gemini), a human armed with a bow having the lower limbs of a horse (Sagittarius), a makara (a type of sea animal) having the face of a deer (Capricorn), one possessing a scale (Libra), and an unmarried girl going in a boat with fire and corn (Virgo). The remaining, the Ram (Aries), the Bull (Taurus), the Crab (Cancer), the Lion (Leo), and the Scorpion (Scorpio) are resembling one's own name. All ॥ the zodiac signs॥ have one's own way of going about things.
