विवाह पूर्वो व्यवहारः ॥

english translation
vivAha pUrvo vyavahAraH ॥

कन्या दानं कन्याम् अलंकृत्य ब्राह्मो विवाहः ॥
The giving in marriage of a maiden well-adorned is called Bráhma-marriage.
kanyA dAnaM kanyAm alaMkRtya brAhmo vivAhaH ॥

सह धर्म चर्या प्राजापत्यः ॥
The joint-performance of sacred duties (by a man and a woman) is known as prájápatya marriage.
saha dharma caryA prAjApatyaH ॥

गो मिथुन आदानाद् आर्षः ॥
(The giving in marriage of a maiden) for a couple of cows is called Arsha.
go mithuna AdAnAd ArSaH ॥

अन्तर् वेद्याम् ऋत्विजे दानाद् दैवः ॥
(The giving in marriage of a maiden) to an officiating priest in a sacrifice is called Daiva.
