To secure gains in the beginning, one should appoint either the commander of the army or the heir-apparent to lead the forces.

बलवान् वा राजा पश्चात् कोप अवग्रह समर्थः पुरस्ताल् लाभम् आदातुं यायात् ॥
Or the king himself may go in person to receive the profit in the front.

अभ्यन्तर कोप शङ्कायां शङ्कितान् आदाय यायात्, बाह्य कोप शङ्कायां वा पुत्र दारम् एषाम् ॥
if he is able to ward off the annoyance in the rear. If he is apprehensive of internal troubles, he may take with him the suspected leaders.

अभ्यन्तर अवग्रहं कृत्वा शून्य पालम् अनेक बल वर्गम् अनेक मुख्यं च स्थापयित्वा यायात्, न वा यायात् ॥
After performing an internal obstruction, one should station an empty guard, numerous divisions of troops , and many commanders, and then either proceed or not proceed.
