प्रतिविहित दुर्गो वा मूले दायाद् अम् कृत्वा प्रतिलोमाम् अस्य दिशं गच्छेत्, यतो वा मित्रैर् बन्धुभिर् आटविकैर् वा संसृज्येत परस्य अमित्रैर् दूष्यैर् वा महद्भिः, यतो वा गतो अस्य मित्रैर् वियोगं कुर्यात् पार्ष्णिं वा गृह्णीयात् राज्यं वा अस्य हारयेत् वीवध आसार प्रसारान् वा वारयेत्, यतो वा शक्नुयाद् आक्षिकवद् अपक्षेपेण अस्य प्रहर्तुम्, यतो वा स्वं राज्यं त्रायेत मूलस्य उपचयं वा कुर्यात् ॥
Having arranged for the defence of the fort by a scion of his family, the enemy may run in an opposite direction where it is possible for him to meet with friends, relatives, or wild tribes, or with his enemy's treacherous friends of vast resources, or where he may separate his enemy from the latter's friends, or where he may capture the enemy's rear, or country, or where he may prevent the transport of supplies to his enemy, or whence he may strike his enemy by throwing down trees at hand, or where he can find means to defend his own country or to gather reinforcements for his hereditary army.

यतः संधिम् अभिप्रेतं लभेत ततो वा गच्छेत् ॥
One should proceed in the direction from which an intended alliance might be secured.

सह प्रस्थायिनो वा अस्य प्रेषयेयुः "अयं ते शत्रुर् अस्माकं हस्त गतः, पण्यं विप्रकारं वा अपदिश्य हिरण्यम् अन्तः सार बलं च प्रेषय यस्य एनम् अर्पयेम बद्धं प्रवासितं वा" इति ॥
His enemy's (the conqueror's) allies may send a mission to him, saying: "This man, your enemy, has fallen into our hands; under the plea of merchandise or some presentation, send gold and a strong force; we shall either hand over to you your enemy bound in chains, or banish him."

प्रतिपन्ने हिरण्यं सार बलं च आददीत ॥
If he approves of it, the gold and the army he may send may be received (by the conqueror).

अन्त पालो वा दुर्ग सम्प्रदाने बल एक देशम् अतिनीय विश्वस्तं घातयेत् ॥
Having access to the enemy's castle, the officer in charge of the boundaries (of the enemy's country) may lead a part of his force and slay the enemy in good faith under the plea of destroying a people in some place, he may take the enemy to an inimical army.
